Just like the city of Wolfsburg is a community that continues to search for and define itself, its cityscape has also been subject to constant change. In seeking to explore this change in a project that impressively showcases the city’s urban transformations, members of various photo clubs from Wolfsburg and Braunschweig used as their point of departure Heidersberger’s seminal photo book Bilder einer jungen Stadt (Photos of a Young City), produced in 1963 in close consultation with local government. Heidersberger’s visual explorations of a city that was only twenty-five-years old at the time—having been designed entirely from the ground up—are juxtaposed with their own images based on research of Heidersberger’s original locations. Whereas a spirit of optimism and the rhythm of a city attuned to the beat of the Volkswagen plant are present in the earlier images, this modern feel recedes from the images created in 2018. The clean lines are gone; without the many playing children, most of the buildings, already marked by the ravages of time, seem almost staid.
