Kraftwerk

Kraftwerk of Volkswagen AG

Wolfsburg 1971

The 1971 photograph of the "Power Plant of Volkswagen AG" marks a pinnacle in the work of Heinrich Heidersberger. This surreal yet impressive depiction, described by Andreas Beitin (Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg) as a convergence of utopia and dystopia, is not only a photographic masterpiece but also a symbol of the post-war economic miracle era in Germany.

The Magic of the Moment

The image captivates with its technical perfection, the choice of timing, and the unique weather conditions: a rare easterly wind on a clear, cool autumn morning. The displacement of the vanishing point to the left side of the image and the parallel alignment of the opposite riverbank to the horizontal create a compelling composition. The low-angle view of the bridge draws the observer deep into the uninhabited, timeless scenery. Color filters provide a deep black sky and snow-white steam, while the long exposure time makes the water appear frozen.
This image has been firmly anchored in the collective consciousness of Wolfsburg since its creation and is among the defining photographs of post-war West Germany.

Its exceptional significance is evidenced by its inclusion in numerous renowned art collections, including the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, the Lentos Art Museum in Linz, and the Fondazione MAST in Bologna, as well as in private collections. To mark the 50th anniversary of the photograph in 2021, regional and international partners collaborated to honor this timeless work. The events and background information are documented on the project website.

Exclusivity and Perfection

The work offered here is an authorized hand print by the Heidersberger Institute, created from the digitally remastered negative. Traditionally developed on silver gelatin baryta paper and archivally processed, it is mounted on an aluminum composite panel, ensuring the highest quality standards.
